The self-powered walking treadmill is about to make its world debut, and its creators hope it will encourage people to exercise and be active.
The Landice is an innovative walking machine that uses your own body weight to power it.
The machine can keep pace with you for long stretches, and it’s designed to be used by people with disabilities.
The designers say it can save lives because it’s lightweight and portable, which means it’s easy to transport and take with you anywhere.
“If we could build a self-powering treadmill for anyone in Australia, we would be really excited,” lead designer and co-founder of Landice, Jeroen van den Broek, said.
The self-driven treadmill is a great way to get out of the house and walk, even if you’re not physically fit.
The company’s been working on the idea for more than three years, and the first prototype is now ready to be tested in Australia.
Landice founder Jeroel van den Brosk said he hoped the self-riding treadmill would make it easier for people with physical limitations to get around.
“We’re not just trying to make a machine that is going to be able to be a walking machine, we’re trying to do something that is a walking device that can do more than just walking,” he said.
“For example, a self powered treadmill can actually help people with mobility issues who have limited movement in their legs, and that could potentially lead to better balance.”
“The Landices ability to use a single person’s body weight, even with a wheelchair, will make the machine more than a walking or running machine.”
He said he believed the treadmill would be a success.
“It’s something that could be quite a big step forward in terms of helping people with a disability walk or run more freely and be more active,” he explained.
“The technology that we’ve developed is very scalable and is scalable to many different people, so I think that it could be something that’s very, very important.”
Jeroel said the company had already seen a large amount of interest from customers in the US, Europe and Asia, and would be rolling out the Landice in other countries as well.
“I think that the Landics ability to run at the same time, to walk with the same weight, to do both of those things, is something that will be a very exciting thing,” he added.
“To be able use the power of your own weight in such a way that you can have a very healthy and active lifestyle and that’s something very, really cool.”
“I’m very excited about it.”JEROEL van den BROECK’S TED Talk in 2014The Landics self-drive treadmill will also be able, for the first time, take people with special needs on a trip with it.
“There’s not a lot of people who have a wheelchair that can walk with it, and we know that for people who do have a disability, this is a way to help them with that,” Mr van den Boys said.
In its demo, Landice showed off a walk in the park in front of a sign reading “Dancing with the Landices”.
“The fact that you are able to walk along the path, that is quite a special way of being able to see and be seen,” Mr Van den Boys explained.
Landics owner Jeroem van den Bos said he thought the self drive treadmill was “very cool”.
“I would say it’s a great step forward for people in the disability community,” he noted.
“And we have this huge amount of people in Australia who are people who can’t walk, and who are at a very special time in their lives, who need this technology to be more mobile and to be in a way where they can do it without the assistance of a wheelchair.”
You can be a little bit of a fitness freak, and you can walk along with the treadmill and be able take the Landic with you.
“This is something we think will be very, good for people.”
“If you have a really severe disability and you want to get your walking done, you can take a Landic.”
“You just can’t get a walk with a chair.”
